A Solemn Farewell
Well draft day has come and gone from the beautiful Consol Energy Center, and as the Pens did indeed draft some very impressive players, they also traded away 2 fan favorites here in the city of Pittsburgh. Michalek was the latest penguin to get dealt, but I start with him because he is the one that probably stings the least in the hearts of Pens fans. Ray Shero gave him a huge contract 2 summers ago when Z was finished in Phoenix, however it turned out to be one of the worst moves Shero had made in the past 5 years. He brought Michalek into a system that just was not the right fit for him. As good as he was his first year in Pittsburgh, Z started to truly struggle this past season, You can blame it on injuries, or who he was paired with on defense, but in the end, this is not the kind of system where a defensemen like him thrives. It will be a good thing for him to go back to Phoenix where the system is not as tolling on defensemen to get the puck out of their zone with one pass and move it up ice, to where the system is more guided towards shot blocking and defensive minded defensemen. What is my favorite Z moment you ask? Earlier this season, (ironically) he scored a goal on a weak wrist shot against the Coyotes, and this was played on the jumbotron at Consol.....
Then we get to the player that has still stunned us all from him leaving, even though alot of us truly saw it coming. And that would be Jordan Staal. What can you really say about the guy? He was the best third line center in the league for at least the past 4 years, he went up against teams other top offensive talent, and was always a threat on the ice whether it was a power play, even strength, or short handed. A huge frame and strong hands like him don't come along that often, but the Penguins got what they wanted in return. They got another great third line center in Brent Sutter who will be able to replace Staal in all positions, and will be a great fit on this team down the middle behind 87 and 71. They also got the #8 overall pick in the NHL Draft, and another defensive chip to build up their defense for years and years to come. In the end, Staal and the Pens got what they wanted. Ray Shero was backed into a corner by Staal and had to make a move and get quality in return, which he did. Staal wanted a more expanded role on a team, and specifically wanted that role to come along side his brother Eric in Carolina. And my favorite Staal moment? Well, is it really even a question?

Win a free shirt by the participating in our #yinzerguess contest. Correctly predict a player and the inning that he will hit a homerun. This is for the 1st homerun for the Pirates. So if Pedro hits 1 in the first inning, the contest is over. The winner gets a free shirt from our store. If more than 1 person correctly guesses the player and the inning that the player hits the home run, the person that tweets it first will win. Winners of the 1st Twitterverse Yinzer Supleratives
Well, the response to the first Twitterverse Yinzer Superlative Contest wasn't very strong, but we need to start somewhere right?
Round 1 had 80 people vote, and the top 4 write-ins in each category moved on to round 2. There were a couple categories where there was a top 3.
Round 2 had 96 people vote. I set my expectations a little low for this first attempt. 96 people isn't bad, but we will do better next time. I am planning on a new contest starting week 1 of the Steelers' season.

Yeah, only live TV, nothin big lol. Royals catcher Humberto Quintero mocks pitcher, Bruce Chen, during an interview on Fox during the game Saturday night. The announcers tried to play it off during the live feed, but they never changed camera shots haha. Leave links to stories about this in the comments section. I haven't found anything.

Welcome to 2012
A good twitter friend gave me an interesting idea. While scoping out potential blog topics he noted I should discuss how twitter has changed the way fans and athletes interact. The more I thought about it the more I realized how dead on he was. Social media (twitter, facebook etc) has completely revolutionized the way we view our favorite athletes. Instead of wondering about what kind of people they are twitter etc has made that knowledge a click away. This ability comes with a price though. With positive opinions come negative opinions as well. Take for example my, and a few others, recent issue with a Mr. Baron Batch. He is a total ass- sexist, cocky, and condescending. These are things I could have lived with not knowing-especially about a guy who has never played a down of football in the NFL. On the other hand,though, twitter gives athletes the chance to thank fans, interact with them, and share details. Malkin thanking pens fans for voting for the NHL cover is a perfect example. My favorite twitter award goes to Ryan Clark though. The man is a total beast. He defends teammates, fans, and loyalty. I loved during the New Orleans situation how he came out asking why players are coming forward now? They weren't tattling while getting paid for injuring others. Or James Harrison's constant verbal attacks on a particular NFL commissioner who won't be named. These are the things that make the twenty-first century so amazing. Would anyone have imagined this in the 1950's? Never. If you haven't followed an athlete, keep it to yourself to avoid embarrassment, and start now. Welcome to 2012.

Sometimes a little ass kissing is needed...
Now although Mike Wallace might read this title and automatically agree that the Steelers should be kissing his ass, I will specify and say it is HIM that needs to be sucking up. I think we can all agree- Mike Wallace is a quick guy. He ran his 40 at the combine at a 4.28 which is one of the fastest in recorded history. And yes, I will agree- for me at least- an advantage of Wallace is that he has to be double covered and it opens other players up, but at this point he's comical. To be specific Larry Fitzgerald is making 120 million dollars over an eight period year. I will be the first person to admit Larry deserves the money- the guy is a beast. Does Wallace deserve the money? Absolutely not. Shoot 30 million his way over six years or so and you'll be more accurate. Mike- you aren't that good. Did you see your playoff appearance in Denver? You dropped enough passes your boy Larry would have been sure to catch. Reality check bud, your fast but you don't have great hands. Finally. My most annoying point in this blog piece. I think if I were demanding an awful lot of money I would show up to OTA's to show how serious I was. First of all- Mike you have a new offensive coordinator who goes by the name of Todd Haley and from what I have heard he's a pretty serious guy. Something tells me he won't take partying in Vegas as an excuse. Also Mike you have a brand new playbook to learn. I would be thinking that's more important than alcohol and strippers but what do I know. And most important. Don't you think the Rooneys are aware of where your priories are or well aren't? And do you really think they find your diva attitude funny?! You're kind of an idiot. And to close. Mike- your boy Ike isn't kidding- football doesn't need you and neither do the Steelers
